《左傳》藉事明義，以敘事為傳體。這種解經方式，稱為「以史傳經」。《左傳》在敘事之外，又「以義傳經」，解釋書法大義。「鄭伯克段于鄢」兼兩種傳經方式而有之。《春秋》記「鄭伯克段于鄢」，《左傳》敘事說理，為之作解。《左傳》敘事與說理部分都存在多種解讀的可能性。《左傳》直解經義，明言「譏失教也」。依此通讀《傳》文，怡然理順，了無窒礙之處。而服虔則提出「養惡」的敘事觀點。後世論者雖或主「失教」，或主「養惡」，或二說混合，但「養惡」說始終主導輿論。是耶非耶？值得精讀省思。
