The research workshop introduces participants to the basics of corpus linguistics as a research method in applied linguistics in the digital era. Topics include approaches to corpus linguistics (corpus-based and corpus-driven or top-down and bottom-up approaches), corpus search and analytical methods, major types of corpora, statistics in corpus linguistics, and methodological evaluation and issues in corpus linguistics. Participants will have the opportunities to practise using available English corpora and corpus analysis tools and compiling their mini corpora for conducting small-scale digital humanities research projects in contemporary language studies.
