Description

ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot that was launched in November 2023, capable of generating human-like text based on context and past conversations. It can generate fluent and natural translations in various domains and styles, using a large-scale pre-trained language model. However, it also poses new challenges for translation education, as it requires translation students to acquire the skills of effective use and evaluation of this latest AI technology. This paper shares the author's experience of incorporating ChatGPT in the course about Computer-aided Translation (CAT) at Lingnan University, which aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills of using various CAT tools. The paper describes the methods and activities used to engage students in using ChatGPT for different types of translation tasks, such as legal, financial and promotional texts. The paper also discusses how to adjust the Temperature setting in ChatGPT to suit different translation needs, such as creativity, accuracy, and fluency, and how to compare ChatGPT with other machine translation tools, such as DeepL, which also allows users to adjust the style of translation. Moreover, the paper emphasizes the importance of machine translation post-editing (MTPE) skills and shows how to evaluate the quality of ChatGPT translations using various criteria and metrics. Furthermore, the paper explores how ChatGPT can be integrated with other CAT tools, such as Termsoup and Phrase, to enhance their machine translation capabilities and facilitate the process of termbase creation. The paper concludes by highlighting the ultimate aim of equipping students with the skills of effective use of the latest AI tools, while reminding them of the value of human translation skills and the need to avoid over-reliance on AI.
