Description

This roundtable reflects on explorations and findings resulting from the large collaborative project The Routledge Companion to Asian Cinemas (RCAC, forthcoming in late 2024). The companion aims to offer fresh perspectives on Asian cinemas and capture new directions in the field, including film/media activism, women’s filmmaking and queer film practices, Trans-Asian circulation of images and imaginaries, redefinition of national cinemas, mixed aesthetic and production modes, and the politics of festivals and archives.

The forum will further explore the trans-Asian, intermedia, and activist approaches of RCAC through diverse research foci: ways of thinking around and complicating transnational feminist cinema based on the practice of women directors in Southeast Asia (Paramaditha); an exchange between Telugu cinema and Russia through historical ideas, films, and individuals (Krishna); the potential for humane visual ethics through Islamic filmmaking and visual culture in Indonesia (Izharuddin); a conversation about Cine Nikkei (cinema by Japanese descents) in Peru and an initiative to exhibit Nikkei films through trans-regional networks (Zhang); and reflections on new research mediating colonial, national, and Trans-Asian imaginaries and Trans-border film industries and cultures (Mukherjee).

The AAS-in-Asia Roundtable is an ideal platform to gather feedback and new ideas to formulate new questions for further research. In the forum, each discussant will reflect on their specific contribution in RCAC in dialogue with other chapters as well as the overall frames of the volume. The expected audiences of the forum are scholars, students, and industry professionals interested in Asian cinemas. The Roundtable provides an opportunity for discussants to share their latest research while inviting conversations, questions, and critical engagement from the audience.
