The President of the Republic of Indonesia declared the spread of COVID-19 as a national disaster on April 13, 2020. Law of the Republic of Indonesia No. 24/2007 concerning Disaster Management mentions that the older people are a vulnerable group and have the right to be prioritised in terms of rescue, evacuation, protection, healthcare, and psychosocial assistance. This research aims to identify the role of the government at the central and regional levels in providing social assistance for the older people during the pandemic. This study utilises open-source data from March to July 2020 obtained from Indonesian government institutions’ official websites. This study finds that most of the assistance programmes targeted at the older people during the pandemic are supports that are irregular in nature (e.g. one time only). These programmes are analysed using the concepts of familisation and defamilisation. Due to the pandemic, some older people were forced to rely on their families because they were unable to work outside the home and did not have a pension fund. Therefore, social assistance from the government during the pandemic is very much needed. The challenge here arises from the inadequate data on the older people who need assistance. Updating the data is needed to make sure that the social assistance is well-targeted and well-distributed.| Period | 10 Feb 2022 |
