Description

Groundbreaking using a merged dataset of Chinese international patent data, annual industrial survey data, and China’s custom data, we make an analysis of international patenting activities of Chinese enterprises effects on export value. Using the Chinese firm-country-product level data from 2000 to 2013, we initially present evidence suggesting that international patenting facilitates export value within firm-country-product variation in both patent and trade, which ranges between 13.4 to 18.5 percent. In our future work, we will collect more detailed data on international patent level and examine mechanisms beyond traditional technology protection that distinguish developed countries in terms of the intention of international patenting for Chinese patents and current China economic background.
