Translation and the Making of Modern Tibetan Diction

Description

Recently, a form of mixed speech dubbed Ra-ma-lug skad "neither-goat-nor-sheep language" has become a topic of scholarly interest. This nascent phenomenon of code-switching between Tibetan and Chinese is particularly popular among youth and urban dwellers in today's Tibet. Sociolinguists often associate the rise of Ra-ma-lug skad with the marginalization of the Tibetan language. From a fresh perspective on, this project argues that compared to cultural studies and sociolinguistics, translation studies proves much more relevant when examining the formation of a Chinese-inflected, modem Tibetan vernacular.
