Writing pirates : vernacular fiction and oceans in Late Ming China

Activity: Talks or PresentationsOther Invited Talks or Presentations

Description

In this talk, I connect early modern Chinese literary production to the emerging discourse of pirates and the sea in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century. I will show how early modern Chinese publications on pirates and oceans display three modes of cross-cultural connection:
1) Chinese literary representation of Sino-foreign diplomacy, war, and overseas Chinese; 2) Chinese reception of Japanese language and literature, and 3) Korean and Vietnamese reception and adaptation of Chinese literature.
