Paul completed his PhD in cultural anthropology at the University of Iowa in 2019. His research focuses on intercultural communication, language, and identity in Asian contexts. He has conducted extensive research with foreigners living in Japan, which explored how language learning and intercultural relations informed their sense of identity, as well as how these intercultural relations impact Japan.
Paul is also interested in language learning methods and how language learning shapes identity development personally and collectively. He has conducted research on the efficacy of diaries in low-level classes and on professional language training in graduate programs in Japan.
