Biography
Yixin Gu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chinese at Lingnan University, Hong Kong, a post he has held since receiving his Ph. D. degree from Princeton University in 2022. His research spans literature and intellectual history in premodern China and beyond, with a primary focus on the early and medieval periods and a wide-ranging interest in poetics, rhetoric, aesthetics, philosophy, historiography, philology, and literary criticism. His research outputs in English and Chinese are published in academic journals including T’oung Pao, Journal of the American Oriental Society (JAOS), Early China, Chinese Literature: Essays, Articles, Reviews (CLEAR), Journal of Chinese Literature and Culture (JCLC), Wenyi yanjiu 文藝研究, and Renwen Zhongguo xuebao 人文中國學報. His first book forthcoming, The Enchantment of Erudition: Intellectual Labor and Literary Culture in Han-Wei China, a work based on his Ph. D. Dissertation (a winner of the Marjorie Chadwick Buchanan Dissertation Prize from Princeton University), investigates how classical Chinese literary culture from the late first century BCE to the third century CE was re-oriented by an intellectual model of individually embodied erudition and its cross-media manifestations. His recent works primarily focus on the integration of embodied experience and the history of language and ideas reflected in classical Chinese literature, discourses, and rhetoric, as well as how they constituted an evolving cultural phenomenology embedded in a socially coded system.
