Abstract
Patrons and professionals may exert great influence upon translation activities. With the rapid development of China’s national power and influence in the international arena, the 21st century has marked an unprecedented era of translating Chinese culture into English, the global lingua franca. The Chinese government considers it very important to support the translation of outstanding Chinese literary and cultural products to the outside world so as to increase China’s cultural soft power. Under this “Going Out Policy”, several big translation projects have been initiated in the new millennium—for example, among others, “Chinese Literature Overseas Dissemination Project” was initiated in 2010 and “CPG China Library” was launched in 2014 with the purpose of translating Chinese culture into the English world. This paper discusses the issues related to patrons and professionals in this background, and, taking the “CPG China Library” project as an example, analyses the roles played by patrons and professionals in translating Chinese literature/culture into English, and investigates the emergence of joint patronage, a new form of patronage, in the 21st century.
