Abstract
This paper discusses the techniques of satire used in Qian Zhongshu's novel Fortress Besieged and shows how comprehensive the author's satire is, how varied his techniques are, and in what way his detached approach differs from those of other novelists. At the same time, it examines the reason why the author stops short of holding the entire world up to satire.
