吴宓对白璧德著作的译介

本文讨论了吴宓在哈佛师从白璧德的情况、吴宓回国后与白璧德的书信来往，以及吴宓翻译白璧德著作的情况。从中可以看到，吴宓与白璧德有密切的师生关系，吴宓对白璧德极为敬重，甚至视其为圣人，回国后创办《学衡》杂志，主要目的之一就是以此来宣传白璧德的新人文主义思想。事实上，在《学衡》杂志中有不少白璧德著作或相关著作的翻译，吴宓在此方面贡献最多。我们从吴宓翻译的《白璧德论民治与领袖》序言的个案分析，可以看到吴宓明显的翻译动机，即希望通过其翻译在中国宣传新人文主义思想。

This article investigates the teacher-student relationship between Wu Mi and Irving Babbitt, their correspondence and Wu's translation of Babbitt's works after he returned to China. The study indicates that Wu and Babbitt had quite close teacher-student relationship. Wu admired Babbitt so much that he even considered him as a saint. One of the major purposes of establishing the journal The Critical Review was to promote Babbitt's New Humanism in China. In fact, in this journal, quite a number of Babbitt's or related works were translated. Among the translators, Wu was the one who made the greatest contributions. Through an analysis of the preface of Wu's translation of Babbitt's Democracy and Leadership, we may find Wu's clear translation motivation, that is, Wu Mi hoped to promote Babbitt's New Humanism through translation in China.
