Abstract

Western-style punctuation was introduced to China after the Opium War and was further promoted during the New Culture Movement. Wu Mi (1894-1978) was an important Chinese scholar, one of the founders of the journal Critical Review, and the representative of the so-called Xueheng School. What is Wu Mi’ s attitude towards the use of new punctuation as advocated during the New Culture Movement? How did Wu Mi deal with the issues related to punctuation in his translation? This article will answer these two questions through a case study of Wu’s translation of Thackeray’s Vanity Fair published in 1926.
