Abstract
《左傳》記宋景曹卒後，季康子使冉求賵之以馬，冉求轉達季氏之辭中提及「旌 繁」一語。據《說文》及段注，此「繁」字係俗字，正字當作「 」，經典如《周禮》 或借「樊」字為之。其義當如許君所言，即馬髦上飾。此字從糸，又引申為繁多之 義，段玉裁據此推斷其物是「集絲絛下垂為飾」。依賈逵、馬融之說，繁纓都在馬胸 前，互相連屬，可視為一體二物，故可單稱纓，亦可連言繁纓。纓指馬胸之革帶及 其飾，尊卑所同。而繁是諸侯以上的馬飾，或以為犛牛尾，或將之比況為漢晉時的 索帬，兩義差近，皆指穗狀飾物。謂繁是犛牛尾，既近其實，其形亦較易掌握。秦 始皇陵銅馬掛於喉部下方及所在部位尚待確定的穗狀纓絡，以及馬頭上的纛，狀甚 相似，可資佐證。「旌繁」連舉，繁既為馬飾，則旌是建於送葬或隨葬車上的旌旗。
The Zuozhuan 左傳 records that when Jing Cao 景曹 of Song 宋 died, Ji Kangzi 季康子 sent Ran You 冉有 to mourn and offer horses, during which Ran You’s citation of Ji’s words mentions the term jingfan 旌繁. The present article examines the use of the term in multiple classical texts, and basing on both textual and archaeological evidence, concludes that fan 繁 refers to a peytral-like chest decoration for horses, whereas jing 旌 denotes the flag used in funeral services.
