Abstract

This article collects and analyzes ancient documents about their sons or daughters' filial piety to their parents, such as the Shiji, Hanshu, and Hou Hanshu. It focuses on the case studies of Shu Guang, Shu Shou, and Lu Jia, which reveals that different family and clan forms of "brothers living together" and "sons dividing up assets and separating family members" respectively in the northern and southern regions from the Han dynasty to the Southern dynasties. These differences were typical during this period. In depth, the distinction is associated with the different influence of Confucianism on the north and south. To some extent, such correlation has contributed to the diverse economic development of the north and south for a long time.
