Abstract

Rewriting the relationship that Hong Kong audiences had with cinematic images, the Hong Kong New Wave allowed audiences to identify with the images on the screen, shifting our collective attitude about life in Hong Kong and shaping our identity. Costume martial arts flicks and soft porn dominated Hong Kong mainstream cinema in the 1970s. The small screen was also filled with costume dramas based on Chinese folklore. These images and stories however were completely divorced from the realities of a rapidly changing Hong Kong. Naturally, younger audiences felt distanced and alienated. The advent of the New Wave movement in Hong Kong created an urban and indigenous cinema.
