Abstract
This paper rethinks some issues between sexual desire and sexual behaviour in past work on pornography studies. Pornography use is often thought to be linked with, or more precisely, solely motivated by sexual desire, and prolonged pornography use can in turn activate our primitive desires, such as aggression toward women. Inherent in this is that there is a one-to-one correspondence between innate sexual desire and sexual behaviour, since once such a desire is stimulated, corresponding behaviour will follow. For that reason, pornography is blamed as the arch-criminal for most sex crimes in society. This article breaks with this logic in that it shows how the use of Japanese AVs by Taiwanese people can have more to do with nonsexual needs. By examining an ethnographic case, it shows how Taiwanese men might develop nonsexual interests in Japanese AVs in a particular way, pertaining to their own biographical experiences, including their family background and personal encounters. I argue that the reason their specific relations with Japanese AVs can be "nonsexual" is that these relations are the mediated results between Taiwanese social structures and their biographical experiences. In other words, pornography use is not just about sexual desire but also about how individuals live the Taiwanese culture as particular.
