According to the 2021 Population Census, the median floor area of subdivided units stands at 11.0 square meters (118.4 square feet). (Census and Statistics Department, Thematic Report: Persons Living in Subdivided Units, 2023)
For those living in subdivided units, creating a home within a hundred-square-foot space is extremely challenging. The labour, memories, and self-awareness hidden beneath the grand narrative are meticulously etched into everyday objects. By tracing the lives of subdivided unit residents through these objects, one can profoundly understand the intricate connections between individuals, spaces, family ties, labour, and policies.
The exhibition originates from sociologist Ruby Lai Yuen-shan's field research, where she visited dozens of families living in subdivided units across the New Territories and Kowloon. The research documents how individuals construct homes within inadequate spaces, relying on their possessions and unpaid labour. This interdisciplinary collaboration selects some of these stories and presents them through art installations and audio journeys, allowing the public to listen to how residents transform subdivided units into homes through their "objects".
