Abstract
Traditional Chinese paintings are mostly displayed in glass or fenced off for protection and preservation reasons. As a result, visitors’ appreciation of traditional Chinese paintings is based on a single vision that is mediated by cabinets. The integration of digital technologies in museum exhibitions has led to the use of interactive exhibits and digital media installations, which offer immersive participatory experiences for appreciating Chinese paintings. This paper argues that digital technologies not only provide interactive and appealing engagement, but also have the potential to digitally transform the unique traditional aesthetic of “qiyun shengdong” (vitality and resonance) in Chinese paintings and offer a sense of presence for the visitors. Presence refers to the psychological state through which an individual feels fully present and engaged in a digital environment. However, current research on visitor experience lacks a discussion on subjective perception concerning presence theory. By adopting presence theory, this study analyses the case study of ‘An Era in Jinling: A Digital Art Exhibition’ held from 2021 to 2024 at the Deji Art Museum in Nanjing. This exhibition employs a cross-platform engine, Unity technology, in conjunction with Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies, creating an experience as if the individual is touring the painting. By examining the display and interpretative methods, digital tools, and visitor engagement, this study aims to explore how digital technology affects visitors’ experience and enhances their understanding and appreciation of traditional Chinese paintings through providing the sense of presence.
