Abstract

<eng> During the Japanese Occupation, the atrocities perpetrated by the Japanese army in Hong Kong were too numerous to record. The most notorious among the army was the Kenpeitai. After the end of World War II, four British military courts were established in Hong Kong. Since March 1946, 46 cases had been heard and 30 of them took place in Hong Kong. Throughout 2 years and 8 months of the entire court proceedings, 13 war criminals had been sentenced to death. After the trials, the whole court records were preserved in the British War Office Archive, and became a valuable historical source of Japanese war crimes committed in Hong Kong. Summarizing the atrocities of the Japanese army, ten records were selected, translated and studied under in-depth research by Hong Kong Local Records Office, involving topics on the Battle of Hong Kong, Kenpeitai and its detachments in Hong Kong, Sham Shui Po POW camp, Stanley Prison, and the Silver Mine Bay Massacre, etc. Furthermore, by tracing the clues from the military court records, witnesses and their descendants were found during re-visits to the relevant places. The archive information was verified and supplemented through interviews and ten special reports were written to reproduce the details of the events. With the translations of military court records and special reports, this book demonstrates the atrocities perpetrated by the Japanese army in Hong Kong and reconstructs the history of the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, with a view to offering lessons for posterity.
