Abstract
This article commemorates Mr. John J. Deeney’s contributions to the Chinese School of Comparative Literature. It argues that his intellectual vision aimed to cultivate a tolerant mindset through moral education, to foster a spirit of cooperation through the study of composite literature, and to reject competitive thinking in favor of nurturing true comparativists. These goals reflect his Confucian gentlemanly character, both as a scholar and as a person. The article explores three key dimensions: the Chinese School’s ethos of harmony and balance, the Hegelian synthesis and concentric-circle theory, and the primacy of education. In remembering Mr. Deeney in this way, the article seeks to critically examine certain implicit definitions and assumptions in contemporary comparative literature studies, and to deepen our reflection on the significance of the Chinese School within its historical context.
