Abstract

There have been calls to establish "Chinese Translation studies" based on traditional Chinese translation theories, while Western ones are rejected without being tested. "Translation theories" here means applied theories instead of pure theories, which should be non-language-specific. The emphasis on a nation-restricted translation studies is in fact a product of national prejudice. China, without any pure translation theories of her own, must borrow them from abroad to provide a framework for the study of Chinese translational phenomena and then improve on them, so as to participate in the development of international translation studies.
