Abstract
This article provides a close reading of the “The Preface of Langtingji” through comparing the conception of Shi Chong’s “The Preface of Jingu Poems”. The difference of the two prefaces could find correlation in Xiang Xiu and Guo Xiang’s annotations of Zhuang Zi, and Zhi Dun’s interpretation of “Xiao Yao”. This article explains a few things of the “The Preface of Langtingji” in the background of metaphysical debate: the conceptual construction, origin of identity, and philosophical sources. From the activities of national sacrifice offering to waterside ritual, it explores many Taoist codes of the terms between texts. The purpose of waterside ritual is for praying and seeking auspiciousness, but the poems of “Langtingji” filled with clichés like “life equals to death”. To set things right, Wang Xizhi paid attention to the emotional inspiration of poetic creation by emphasizing the viewpoint “life and death are big things”. This could help the contemporary poetics out of misunderstanding, and it also pointed out the right direction for the poets in the period of Jin Dynasty to the beginning of the Southern and Northern Dynasties to inherit the Shijing and Lisao tradition.
