Abstract

The Book of Etiquette and Rites (Yili) contains specific rules regarding rituals and writing. Scholars have long debated the interpretation of the “pibianfu” costume, particularly concerning the materials used for its upper and lower garments and the punctuation of the “pibianfusuji” passage. This paper focuses on two key articles, by Chen Li (1810–1882) and So Man-jok (1921–1997) respectively, to address these issues. By examining the challenges faced by scholars from antiquity to the present and referencing crucial facts recorded in the Analects and the Zuo zhuan, this study clarifies the correct application of the ritual and writing rules, and subsequently establishes an appropriate strategy for interpreting the various costumes described in the Yili.
