Abstract
This paper tries to describe the model of second culture acquisition, based on which an intercultural approach to foreign language teaching (FLT) is proposed. Empirical studies are done proving that foreign language students who possess high second language competence do not necessarily possess high intercultural competence, so special attention should be given to culture teaching in FLT and the current practice of culture teaching in China’s FLT must be reformed. The author proposes that the fundamental goal of FLT should be the cultivation of intercultural competence aiming to make foreign language students productively intercultural.
