Abstract

Scholars have been borrowing from Sociology some theories, concepts, and methods in their research into translation, and with some positive outcomes. In case of the application of Actor-Networking Theory (ANT), however, the situation is not quite satisfactory. Comparing to other sociological approaches to translation, the Bourdieusian approach in particular, ANT has not been fully understood and adequately applied. Rich in meaning, and with different theoretical branches and interpretations of some of its concepts, ANT is still in the process of development. It requires researchers in Translation Studies to grasp the very meaning of ANT, and to apply integrated, or tailored if necessary, concepts of ANT in a systematic manner according to the needs of translation research. Based on a discussion of two ANT terms, i.e., the modes of translatingANT interests and inscription, as well as methods in ANT-guided research, this article moves on to analyse what new research questions, and research directions or perspectives could they bring to Translation Studies, which may in turn make impacts on the latter.
