Abstract
In the decades following the end of the World War Ⅱ, Hong Kong grew into a high-density city. During this period, the tower-on-podium residential building complex dominated the cityscape of Hong Kong. This article provides a historical account of the toweron-podium building and points out the fact that this building type is a product of Hong Kong’s long effort to regulate the living environment amid rapid population growth. It demonstrates the ways building codes shaped the architectural design and eventually produced an architectural prototype for the high-density comprehensive development in Hong Kong.
