Abstract

In order to canonize the Book of Poetry, the scholars of the Book of Poetry in Han Dynasty used to annotate it through changing genders of characters presented in poems, understanding fragments flexibly and tuning some actual events into imaginary ones. These three interpretative strategies were especially popular among the Han Confucians. While we criticize some ridiculous or unconvincing misinterpretations by them, we should pay attention to the literary values of misinterpretation, trace out meanings beyond words or verses, and thereby find the relationship between misinterpretation and later literary theories.
