Abstract
Richard Dawkins in his infl uential book The Selfish Gene(一九七六) introduces the concept of the meme. It is defined as "a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation". This paper investigates the idea that Shakespeare’s plays are sites of propagation of memes within and across cultures. It refers to a number of adaptations, appropriations and variations of one of his most adapted plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with particular focus on a range of critically acclaimed appropriation of Shakespeare’s Dream.
