Abstract
The inter-relationship between translation and language teaching has been the subject of debate in Applied Linguistics since the 60's and the 70's. For translation teachers, it is probably easier to achieve quality teaching and learning provided that the bilingual capacity of students is of considerable standard. However, the declining Chinese and English proficiency of students in Hong Kong these days is very much a known and accepted fact. What can translation teaching do to orient itself in face of such a changing teaching variable? With reference to her experience in interpretation teaching, the author offers to explain the weakening language and interpretation capacity of students in Hong Kong, and suggests reviewing interpretation curriculum, and interpretation teaching approach as possible ways out for the stated problems.
