Abstract

This chapter examines the access policies and facilities of the British Museum in comparison with those of the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, with special focus on their online collection databases of Chinese paintings developed in the 2000s. By looking into the practice of a national museum and a university museum, I will also illuminate how the two institutions encourage a wider access to collections and an active use of online resources and learning services for enhancing the study of Chinese painting.
