Abstract

Owing to the imperfect knowledge and language ability of child readers, translators often encounter great difficulties and challenges in translating children's literature. In addition, when translating children's fantasy literature which is in a highly local cultural form, translators often encounter translating problems on culture-specific items. Although previous studies have investigated the translation strategies used in dealing with culture-specific items, there were relatively limited studies in evaluating readers' satisfaction of these applied strategies. This study attempts to find out the translation problems and challenges in the aspect of culture-specific items and to evaluate the effectiveness of these translation strategies. The study is conducted through a text-based case study by selecting the first five Harry Potter books as the source texts and their corresponding traditional-Chinese-character translation as the target texts. The effectiveness of the applied translation strategies to deal with the culture-specific items was evaluated by observing 15 target readers' response with questionnaires. The result of the present study may give children's fantasy translators a clearer picture on translators' solution for dealing with culture-specific items.
