《文心雕龙》之所以体大虑周，离不开“述”“作”两端的卓越成就。就“述”而论，极其重视知识储备的刘勰以整理佛典为契机，继承、借鉴了《汉书·艺文志》在目录文献学上的杰出成果，提纲挈领，温故知新，运用提炼学术的手段和眼光形成创新思维，在《文心雕龙》的内在思想和外在框架上将刘向父子由重经学到重诗赋的文章学观念转变进一步落实。在这一过程中，其文章文体学、文体史学等观念亦深受《汉书·艺文志》影响。 The greatness of The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragon lies in the balancing and interaction of its “narration” and “argumentation” as two distinguished features. Narration reflects Liu Xie’s study and thorough understanding of Buddhism knowledge, from where he further studies and inherits the merit of Liu Xiang’s and his son’s outstanding achievement in the field of document catalogue studies embodied in The Book of Han: Literature and Art. Through reviewing, reflecting, criticising, inferring and deducting in the process of his reading of other masterpieces, Liu Xie has formed his own new and innovative point of view. His The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragon has formally realized the transfer of compositional style from Liu's emphasis on scripture to emphasis on poems and verses. In this process, Liu Xie was greatly influenced by The Book of Han: Literature and Art in stylistics and stylistic history.
