A quarter of a century ago, two regular contributors to Chatham House's China studies project of that era, David S. G. Goodman and Gerald Segal, published a ground-breaking edited volume with the catchy title of China deconstructs (London: Routledge, 1994). Eschewing the possibility of a dramatic Soviet-style disintegration, though, the various experts did set out some relatively cautious thoughts on the processes of decentralization and the emerging priorities of the different regions within China.
