Abstract
Comparing the vast continents and complex societies and nationstates that make up South Asia and Africa is not an easy task. This explains the paucity of books on the subject. Hence, Waites (senior research fellow, Open Univ., UK) needs to be congratulated for taking the challenge. Overall, he provides an adequate overview of the two continents' tumultuous postindependence experience.
