Abstract

Wind bands have held a disadvantaged position in the music world for a long time. This article uses the author's research experience as a case study. It analyzes how the author's research on wind band history has changed public perception of wind bands' status. This includes sharing research findings, both academic and non-academic, in various settings, organizing non-traditional concerts, and publishing academic books on wind band history. The author attempts to establish a new theoretical framework, challenging mainstream views on music history. This includes examining the role of wind band history in Hong Kong's music history, how wind band history connects internationally, and the relationship between wind band history and cultural policy. Furthermore, the author aims to promote the academization of wind band research in Hong Kong.
