Curating Taiwan Cinema in the Twenty-first Century

Research output: Book Chapters | Papers in Conference ProceedingsForeword / Postscript

Abstract

This volume is a work of curation, a selection of representative texts on the past and present of Taiwan film. Curation involves ideas of stewardship, recognition of a work's importance, and gestures of canon formation. Film curating typically happens in international festivals, in which new talents and old classics alike are selected by experienced programmers whose primary loyalty is to the quality of works and the integrity of the program. However, selecting films - or any artworks - for public viewing is not just a privilege belonging to professional curators. As films studies academics, we wish to share our vision through this curatorial exercise to reveal a wider range of cinematic practices from Taiwan.
