Abstract

The emerging working class in modern China has been traditionally portrayed in a simplified and highly politicized fashion. Based on historical source materials and related literature, this paper attempted a new approach - to explore how locality, blood relationship, clan ties, gender relationship, etc., have helped to form the subjective identity of the working class. Our conclusion is that, in modern times, the working class appeared on the stage not only as a working or political entity, but, more importantly, as an evolving cultural entity.
