Abstract

Hong Kong is an important trading center located on the southern coast of China. It is the world’s eighth largest trading nation measured in terms of value of merchandise trade in 1999 (Hong Kong Annual Report, 1999). In addition to its reliance on trade, Hong Kong’s prosperity also depends heavily on the tourism and the provision of business and financial services. Hong Kong is the best example of a free enterprise economy. The Hong Kong government provides a sound regulatory structure for conducting business but with very little intervention, the tax rates are very low, and yet the infrastructure is very well developed.
