Abstract

The entry begins with a brief description of the development of flexible work practices in the last three decades. Definitions of flexible work practices, with various similar terms, are provided. The entry then discusses the prevalence of flexible work practices in European and North American countries. There are some discussions on the advantages of work flexibility, and factors to be considered when adopting flexible work practices, including gender equality, occupational type, organizational climate of trust, and equity. Family-friendly practices (specifically family-friendly employment policies and practices— FEPPs), as related concepts of workplace flexibility, are also discussed. Different categories of FEPPs and research evidence in western and Chinese societies are illustrated. This entry ends with the discussion on the importance of flexible work practices before COVID-19, during-COVID-19, and post-COVID-19.
