“I Decide What I See”: How Consumers Proactively Shape Personalized Recommendations

Research output: Other Conference ContributionsPresentation

Abstract

This research demonstrates that when consumers perceive a recommender system to be personalized (vs. non-personalized), they proactively consume more attitude-consistent news relative to attitude-inconsistent news, aiming to influence future recommendations. This research also discovers that political conservatism and the belief in open-mindedness as an injunctive norm can attenuate the effect.
