Abstract

Offered at the Nobel Symposium 110 on the Translation of Poetry and Poetic Prose. In light of the discussion at the Symposium, I have decided to emphasize the subjunctiveness of the propositions made in this paper by putting inverted commas around "Enhancement". An earlier version was presented at the conference of the American Comparative Literature Association, March 26–28, 1998, in Austin, Texas.
