Abstract
The internationalization of higher education (IHE) is affecting institutions, countries, and regions worldwide. However, an analysis of its impact on the historical evolution of Mexican higher education is still pending, and this study aims to examine it. Due to being in the Western hemisphere under the influence of core capitalist countries advocating for the IHE globally, the stages in the development of Mexican higher education in the 1970s– 2023 period exhibit clear trends while coverage remains the primary concern. The findings highlight key political and economic features when analyzing the impact of IHE in developing countries, and the challenges Mexico will face in the upcoming years.
