Bibliographical note
The idea of this Special Issue was first conceived during a series of symposia and workshops (International Wildlife Photo-ID Network) organized by the Saimaa Ringed Seal Research Group at University of Eastern Finland, coordinated by Mervi Kunnasranta, funded by Finish Cultural Foundation, and held at the University of Eastern Finland in 2014–2015. The workshops brought together a diverse group of international experts and provided an excellent networking opportunity. Several authors contributing papers to this Special Issue and three of the Editors participated in these workshops. While it took a few more years for the Special Issue to grow and mature, its origins are deeply rooted in this series of excellent symposia and workshops, and our sincere thanks are due to the organizers, the Saimaa Ringed Seal Research team, especially Mervi Kunnasranta, Marja Niemi, Miina Auttila and Meeri Koivuniemi.Very special thanks go to Frank Zachos, the Editor-in-Chief of Mammalian Biology at the time we were considering various journals for this thematic issue. It was primarily because of his positive and ever-supportive attitude that we chose Mammalian Biology to host this Special Issue. Frank was truly an exemplary Editor-in-Chief and working with him was not only efficient and productive but also a real pleasure. While he moved on to other commitments before this Special Issue project was completed, we remember him fondly and extend our sincere thanks for his support throughout.
Over 70 external reviewers assessed and commented on the papers published in Part 1 of this Special Issue; many of them remained anonymous. We extend our sincere thanks for their selfless effort and generosity in contributing valuable expertise that greatly enhanced the quality of papers assembled in this thematic collection.
