Abstract

Throughout the Mao Zedong era and in its immediate aftermath, Hong Kong served as a gateway to China and provided it with a window on the outside world. But in 1979 a profound change occurred, as China committed itself to an “open door” strategy. Indeed, with hindsight, 1979 emerges as one of the most important years in human history as it was when the first communist country (and the world’s most populous country) opened up its doors to the world. It is no exaggeration to suggest that from 1979 human history has begun to follow a wholly new course.
