Abstract

Over recent years, higher education institutions including small liberal arts colleges have been faced with various challenges including a decrease in the number of applicants and subsequent financial shortages. The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified their difficulties and revealed both the strengths and weaknesses of liberal arts colleges and their programs. This chapter discusses a few of the challenges and difficulties that liberal arts colleges are experiencing during the COVID-19 pandemic that are drawn from academic literature and the media. It explains how this book is prepared and organized to explore the unique approaches to overcoming such challenges adopted by several selected world liberal arts colleges, and it goes on to redefine liberal arts education for the future in a specific sociocultural context.
