Abstract
This chapter briefly explains the history and developmental stages of Machine Translation (MT) and exemplifies how rapidly it has developed in terms of language quality, while also highlighting some important caveats. It then goes on to outline some of the impacts on, and responses by, the language teaching community. Finally, it makes some tentative predictions for the future impact of this technology.
