Abstract
This chapter begins with an overview of language-pair specificity as an implicit research theme that has been overlooked in interpreting studies. Section 2 discusses typical language-specific issues in interpreting. Section 3 summarises special challenges in Chinese/English interpreting as perceived by practitioners and trainers and the contrasting differences between Chinese and English that impact interpreting. Sections 4 and 5 present coping strategies for structural asymmetry in Chinese-to-English simultaneous interpreting and in English-to-Chinese simultaneous interpreting, which are illustrated with typical examples.
