Abstract
Leadership has stimulated thousands of research studies and many models, but the resulting knowledge base has been disappointing with a modest impact on practice (Hunt and Dodge, 2000; Kouzes and Posner, 1995). Especially when compared to stories of managers re-invigorating and re-directing their organizations, leadership research seems placid and removed from the demands and opportunities of running today's organizations.
